Why they're disappearing
Three forces are killing the breed: crossbreeding with imported dogs, urbanisation reducing their traditional hunting grounds, and simple neglect. The Karnataka government launched a conservation program, and India Post honoured the breed with a stamp, but population continues to decline.
Temperament
Mudhol Hounds are not affectionate in the way Labs are. They're dignified, independent, and reserved. They bond deeply with one person and tolerate others. They're not ideal for families wanting a cuddly, playful dog. They're perfect for owners who respect a dog's independence.
Exercise — non-negotiable
This is a running breed. They need to sprint — not walk, not jog — at full speed for 20-30 minutes daily. Without this, they become destructive or withdrawn. Access to a large fenced area is essential. Not an apartment-first breed unless you're near open land.
Health
Extremely healthy. Few genetic conditions. Watch for: sighthound sensitivity to anaesthesia (inform your vet), and occasional bloat. Low grooming needs — weekly brush, monthly bath. Regular vaccinations and monsoon tick prevention apply.
Where to find one
Contact the Mudhol Hound Breeders' Association in Bagalkot, Karnataka. Avoid pet shops. Expect ₹5,000-15,000 for a puppy. Demand health certification and lineage documentation.
