For decades, the "multiply by 7" rule was the go-to. But in 2019, researchers at the University of California San Diego published a groundbreaking study using DNA methylation patterns — the biological clock built into every cell.
Their finding: dogs age much faster in their early years and slow down later. A 1-year-old dog is closer to a 30-year-old human, not a 7-year-old.
This calculator also adjusts for breed size, because large dogs age faster than small dogs:
| Size | Weight | Example Breeds | Avg. Lifespan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small | < 10 kg | Pomeranian, Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso, Chihuahua | 13–16 years |
| Medium | 10–25 kg | Indian Pariah, Beagle, Cocker Spaniel, Indie Mix | 12–15 years |
| Large | 25–45 kg | Labrador, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Dalmatian | 10–13 years |
| Giant | > 45 kg | Great Dane, Saint Bernard, English Mastiff, Tibetan Mastiff | 7–10 years |
Indian Pariah dogs (Indie dogs) deserve special mention — they're among the healthiest breeds globally, with fewer genetic predispositions to disease. Their natural selection over thousands of years in the Indian subcontinent has produced remarkably resilient genetics.
