The Indian Indie — also called the Indian Pariah Dog, Desi Dog, or INDog — is not a mixed breed. It's a landrace: a naturally evolved breed shaped by thousands of years of Indian conditions. And it's the best pet dog most Indian families will ever own.

Nutrition — what Indies actually need
"Just feed them rice" is not care. Indies thrive on a balanced diet combining quality kibble with home-cooked food.
Recommended diet: 60-70% quality commercial kibble (Drools, Royal Canin Medium Adult, Pedigree Pro) + 30-40% home-cooked (boiled chicken, rice, dal, seasonal vegetables). Add a tablespoon of curd daily for gut health.
Cost: ₹1,500-2,500/month. That's less than your Swiggy subscription and gives your dog everything they need nutritionally.
Avoid: Onion, garlic, grapes, raisins, chocolate, and excessive salt. See the full list of toxic Indian foods.
Health care
Indies are remarkably healthy, but they're not invincible. Adopted strays especially need initial medical attention:
- First vet visit: Complete blood panel, deworming, flea/tick treatment. Budget ₹2,000-4,000.
- Vaccination: Full puppy series or adult catch-up course. Same schedule as any breed.
- Spay/Neuter: ₹3,000-8,000. Essential for adopted strays. Reduces roaming, aggression, and cancer risk.
- Common issues: Tick fever (from prior street exposure), skin infections (resolves with nutrition), ear mites. All treatable and preventable.
Training an Indie
Indies are intelligent, independent, and sometimes stubborn. They're not as food-motivated as Labs or as eager-to-please as GSDs. What works:
- Positive reinforcement only — Indies shut down with punishment. Use treats, praise, play.
- Short sessions — 10-15 minutes, 3× daily. They get bored with repetition.
- Socialisation early — Exposure to people, dogs, sounds, vehicles in the first 4 months is critical.
- Patience with fear — Adopted Indies may have trauma. Respect their pace. Professional help if needed.
Where to adopt
Every Indian city has shelters with vaccinated, spayed/neutered Indies ready for adoption: CUPA (Bangalore), Blue Cross (Chennai, Hyderabad), Welfare of Stray Dogs (Mumbai), Friendicoes (Delhi). Most charge ₹0-2,000 as an adoption fee that covers vaccination and sterilisation.
