Every year, Indian veterinary clinics see a 40-60% spike in pet visits during monsoon. This guide covers 12 things every Indian dog parent needs to do before and during the rains.

1. Tick and flea prevention

Monsoon humidity creates perfect tick breeding conditions — populations explode 300-400% during June-September. Tick fever is the #1 monsoon killer of Indian dogs. Start monthly prevention 2-3 weeks before monsoon. Spot-ons (Frontline Plus, Bravecto) or oral chewables (NexGard). Cost: ₹400-1,200/month vs ₹10,000-25,000 for treatment.

2. Paw care

Wet roads, standing water, hidden debris. Wash and dry paws after every walk. Paw washer cup (₹300-500). Dry between toes — fungal infections start in damp crevices. Coconut oil or paw balm daily.

3. Raincoats and drying

A consistently damp coat breeds fungal and bacterial infections. Dog raincoat (₹500-1,200) for walks. Towel-dry + blow dryer on low heat. Don't skip ears — ear infections account for 25% of monsoon vet visits.

4. Diet adjustments

Humidity affects digestion. Switch to easily digestible food temporarily. Add probiotics or curd. Only filtered water — no puddle drinking, no garden hose water.

5. Leptospirosis vaccine

Spreads through contaminated water — rat urine in puddles, flooded drains. Kidney and liver damage can be irreversible. Confirm your dog's lepto vaccine is current (lasts 12 months). Get booster 2-3 weeks before monsoon. Full vaccination schedule here →

6. Skin care

Hot spots, ringworm, yeast infections spike during monsoon. Bathe weekly with antifungal shampoo (chlorhexidine-based). Keep sleeping area dry — change bedding twice weekly. Early treatment: ₹500-1,000 vs advanced: ₹5,000-10,000.

7. Thunder anxiety

30-40% of dogs have noise anxiety. Create a safe den (enclosed space with blankets). White noise or calm music. ThunderShirt (gentle pressure calms). Never punish fear. For severe cases, consult vet about short-term anti-anxiety medication.

8. Walking schedule

Early morning (before 7 AM) and late evening (after 7 PM) between rain spells. Shorten to 15-20 minutes but keep twice daily. Avoid waterlogged areas. Urban runoff carries chemicals and sewage.

9. Indoor enrichment

Rainy days = missed walks = pent-up energy. Kong toys with frozen peanut butter (₹400-800), puzzle feeders (₹500-1,200), lick mats (₹300-600). 15 minutes of training tires a dog more than 30 minutes of walking.

10. Snake awareness

Monsoon floods snake habitats, pushing them indoors. Keep ground-floor areas clear. Supervise evening outdoor time. Know the snake bite protocol — keep still, no tourniquet, rush to vet with antivenom.

11. Deworming

Quarterly schedule at minimum. During monsoon, vet may recommend extra dose. Watch for: scooting, pot belly, weight loss despite normal appetite.

12. Home hygiene

Wash dog bedding twice weekly in hot water. Store kibble in airtight containers. Mop floors with pet-safe disinfectant. Run dehumidifier if humidity exceeds 70%.

FOUNDER NOTE

Leo's first Bengaluru monsoon

By July, Leo had a fungal infection between his toes, a tick behind his ear, and a stomach upset from drainage water. Three vet visits in one month. All preventable — we just didn't know. This guide exists so you do. — Ranjiesh, Leo's dad.

The one thing to do today

Check your dog's tick prevention status. If the last dose was more than 30 days ago, book a vet visit or order a spot-on treatment today. Monsoon is coming.
