    The 7 days after an emergency decide long-term outcome. What to watch for — hour by hour, day by day.

    FIRST 24 HOURS

    Stabilize & observe

    • Follow vet's exact feeding/water instructions — no "compensating" with extra food
    • Check breathing rate every 2 hours (normal: 10-30 breaths/min for dogs)
    • Note every bathroom visit — color, consistency, frequency
    • Photograph the wound/affected area at same time daily for comparison
    • Keep them indoors, quiet, dim lighting. No stairs, no jumping
    24 – 72 HOURS

    Medication & rest

    • Set phone alarms for every medication dose — don't trust memory
    • Short leash walks only. 5-10 min, twice daily max
    • Separate from other pets if contagious or stressed
    • Watch for fever (above 39.5°C), lethargy, refusal to eat 24+ hours
    • Call vet immediately if any "red flag" appears — don't wait till morning
    DAY 4 – 7

    Return to normal · watch for relapse

    • Gradual increase in activity — 25% more each day

    Onion · Garlic (raw or cooked)
    In every dal, sabzi. Destroys red blood cells over 2-4 days. Symptoms delayed — don't assume safe.
    Grapes · Raisins (kishmish)
    Even 4-5 raisins can cause kidney failure in small dogs. Common in Indian desserts.
    Chocolate (dark > milk)
    Theobromine is toxic. 25 g dark chocolate for a 10 kg dog = ER visit.
    Pan / Betel leaf / supari
    Areca nut + slaked lime = severe oral damage + seizures if eaten.
    Naphthalene balls (camphor)
    Classic Indian home hazard. Even 1 ball = liver damage + neuro signs.
    Xylitol (sugar-free gum, mints)
    Drops blood sugar in 30 min. Even tiny amounts fatal.
    Turmeric paste (large amounts)
    Tiny culinary amount OK. Raw paste on cuts = GI upset + blood thinning.
    Rat poison (Racumin)
    Common household pest control. Anticoagulant — dogs bleed internally over 2-5 days.
    Caffeine (chai, coffee)
    Dropped mug of chai = small dog spotted. Watch for tremors, rapid heartbeat.
    Macadamia nuts
    Increasingly common in Indian gift hampers. Tremors, weakness 12-24 hours.
    Lily flowers (cats)
    Kidney failure in cats from just licking pollen. Remove from any home with a cat.
    Aloe vera (ingested)
    Safe topically, toxic if eaten. Common balcony plant across India.

    It was a Tuesday night. We'd just moved to Bangalore. Leo — our Labrador — got bit. We didn't know by what. The swelling started around 11 PM.

    We Googled. Most results were American. We called three vets. Two didn't answer. The third said "come in the morning." Morning felt like a long time away.

    We didn't know Leo's blood type. We didn't know if our society gate would let a stranger vet inside at midnight. We didn't know which hospitals had antivenom. We didn't know if turmeric paste would help or harm. We knew nothing about the monsoon snake we'd never seen.
