Heat stroke kills dogs faster than most Indian pet parents realise. Body temperature above 40.5°C causes organ damage within minutes. By the time you notice, the window for action is already closing.
The 60-second check
- Excessive panting — rapid, heavy, louder than normal
- Drooling — thick, ropy saliva
- Bright red gums that turn pale/blue as it worsens
- Vomiting or diarrhoea
- Staggering or collapse
- Glazed eyes
If you see 2+ of these after heat exposure → treat as heat stroke. Don't wait.
First aid — the 5-step protocol
- 1. Move to shade/AC immediately
- 2. Cool (don't freeze) — wet paws, belly, armpits with cool water. NOT ice water (causes vasoconstriction)
- 3. Fan + evaporation — wet towel + fan cools faster than ice packs
- 4. Small sips of cool water — don't force. Don't let them gulp
- 5. Vet NOW — even if they seem better. Organ damage shows 12-24 hours later
Breeds at highest risk in India
| High Risk | Moderate Risk | Lower Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Pug, Bulldog, Shih Tzu, Pekingese (brachycephalic) | GSD, Golden Retriever, Husky, Saint Bernard (double coat) | Indian Indie, Rajapalayam, Chippiparai, Mudhol (heat-adapted) |
Prevention
- Walk before 7 AM / after 6 PM only (Apr-Jun)
- Never leave your dog in a parked car — reaches 50°C in 15 minutes
- Constant water access — carry a portable bowl on walks
- Provide shade + ventilation at all times
- Reduce exercise intensity during peak heat days
- Brachycephalic breeds: AC is mandatory, not optional
Mitra AI detects heat risk
Mitra AI cross-references your city's real-time temperature with your dog's breed heat tolerance profile and sends proactive alerts: "Bengaluru is hitting 36°C today — skip the noon walk for Leo." Prevention by data, not by guesswork. — Ranjiesh, Leo's dad.
The one thing to do today
Check tomorrow's forecast. If it's above 32°C, move walks to before 7 AM. Your dog can't tell you they're overheating until it's almost too late. You have to plan ahead.
