Golden Retrievers are India's most popular family dog. They're also the most over-fed, under-exercised, and heat-stressed breed in Indian apartments. Here's how to do it right.
The 5 mistakes Indian Golden owners make
1. Ignoring heat management
Goldens have a dense double coat evolved for Canadian water retrieving — not Bangalore summers. They overheat above 32°C. AC during peak summer is medical necessity, not luxury. Morning walks before 7 AM, evening after 6 PM only. Never exercise during midday heat.
2. Overfeeding
Goldens have the same POMC gene mutation as Labradors — they're genetically always hungry. A healthy adult male: 28-34 kg. If your Golden exceeds 36 kg, they're overweight. Every extra kg adds stress to joints and reduces lifespan. Measure food. Don't free-feed. Ignore the begging eyes.
3. Skipping grooming
That beautiful coat sheds. Constantly. Brush 3-4 times weekly minimum. Professional grooming every 6-8 weeks. During season change (Oct-Nov, Mar-Apr), daily brushing prevents matting. Never shave a Golden — the double coat actually insulates against heat.
4. Insufficient exercise
Goldens need 60+ minutes daily — real exercise, not a slow stroll. Swimming is ideal (they're water dogs). Fetch, running, and agility training work. A Golden with 20-minute walks twice daily will become destructive or obese or both.
5. Ignoring ear care
Floppy ears + Indian humidity = chronic ear infections. Clean ears weekly — more during monsoon. Dry ears after swimming or bathing. If you smell a yeasty odour from the ears, you're already behind.

Health issues to watch
- Hip dysplasia — 20% prevalence. Joint supplements from age 2. Weight management critical.
- Cancer — Goldens have one of the highest cancer rates among breeds. Regular vet checks after age 6.
- Skin allergies — Worse in Indian humidity. Antifungal shampoo during monsoon.
- Obesity — The #1 preventable health issue. Strict portion control.
Why Leo (a Lab) and Goldens are cousins
Labs and Goldens share ancestry, temperament, and unfortunately, the obesity gene. Everything I learned managing Leo's weight applies to Goldens. Petrāah's health score tracks weight trend specifically because of this breed family. — Ranjiesh, Leo's dad.
The one thing to do today
Weigh your Golden Retriever. If over 34 kg (male) or 32 kg (female), they're likely overweight. Reduce portions by 10% and increase exercise. Your vet can confirm ideal weight for your dog's frame.
