If you want a medium-sized family dog for an Indian apartment, the choice usually comes down to these two. Both are excellent — but for very different reasons.

The barking question
This is the #1 differentiator for Indian apartments. Beagles are vocal — they bay, howl, and bark at sounds, scents, and sometimes nothing. In a thin-walled apartment, this generates complaints. Cocker Spaniels bark but are significantly quieter and more trainable to be quiet.
Grooming — the hidden cost
Beagles need almost zero grooming — short coat, wash-and-go. Cockers need weekly brushing, monthly professional grooming (₹1,500-3,000), and ear cleaning twice weekly (floppy ears + Indian humidity = chronic infections). Over a year, grooming alone adds ₹18,000-36,000 for a Cocker vs ₹0-6,000 for a Beagle.
The verdict
You want a sturdy, low-maintenance, kid-friendly dog. You can handle barking. You have a ground floor or tolerant neighbours. You want to spend less on grooming.
You want a quieter, more affectionate dog. Someone is home most of the day (separation anxiety). You enjoy grooming as bonding. You're prepared for ear maintenance during monsoon.

The one thing to do today
If choosing between these two, visit a breeder or rescue and spend 30 minutes with each breed. Adults, not puppies. The energy level and noise level in person will settle the debate faster than any article.
