Parasitic worms affect up to 80% of Indian dogs at some point in their lives. Yet most pet parents either forget to deworm entirely or do it at random intervals. Here's the correct schedule.
Deworming schedule by age
| Age | Frequency | Product | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2-12 weeks | Every 2 weeks | Drontal Puppy / Panacur | ₹50-150/dose |
| 3-6 months | Monthly | Drontal Plus / Cantel Plus | ₹80-200/dose |
| 6+ months | Every 3 months | Drontal Plus / Endogard | ₹100-250/dose |
| Adults (monsoon) | Extra dose during monsoon | Same as above | ₹100-250 |
Signs of worms
- Scooting (dragging rear on ground)
- Pot-bellied appearance (especially puppies)
- Weight loss despite normal appetite
- Visible worms in stool or around anus
- Dull coat, lethargy
- Vomiting (sometimes with worms)
Common worms in Indian dogs
Roundworms: Most common, especially in puppies. Spaghetti-like in stool. Hookworms: Cause anaemia, bloody stool. Common in monsoon. Tapeworms: Rice-grain segments around anus. From fleas. Whipworms: Bloody diarrhoea, weight loss. Harder to detect.
Monsoon deworming
Wet soil and contaminated water dramatically increase parasite exposure during monsoon. Your vet may recommend an extra deworming dose during June-September even if you're on a quarterly schedule. Pair with tick prevention for complete parasite protection.
Petrāah's deworming reminders
The app tracks your dog's deworming schedule and sends reminders based on age — bi-weekly for puppies, quarterly for adults, with monsoon boost alerts. No more "when did we last deworm?" — Ranjiesh, Leo's dad.
The one thing to do today
Check when your dog was last dewormed. If it's been more than 3 months (or 2 weeks for a puppy under 12 weeks), buy a deworming tablet today. Cost: ₹100-250. Time: 2 minutes. Protection: priceless.
